Over the past three decades, the Rockford Preservation Society has obtained, through purchase or donation, six historic properties. Three have been restored and are open to the public. Rockford Park recently opened at the fourth site, and two 19th-century buildings are in need of immediate restoration.
Rockford has many friends and supporters who have helped the RPS restore Rockford Methodist Church, the Dudley Glass Store/Davenport Gallery, and the Rockford Post Office. Much broader support now is needed for the restoration of the circa 1800 Masonic Lodge Building, the circa 1830 York Tavern, and the completion of Rockford Park at the site of the circa 1796 Grant-Burrus Hotel.
Rockford’s Heritage
A major thrust of the Remember Rockford campaign is for the village to reconnect with the descendants of families for whom Rockford is an ancestral home. The culmination of the “Remember Rockford” campaign will be a Remember Rockford Families Reunion in 2010.
The Grant-Burrus Hotel site, the Masonic Lodge and the York Tavern are key historical properties in the village. The park is at the southern gateway to the village and is an ideal venue for community events such as concerts and historical presentations. The lodge and tavern in the center of the village will house historical displays and should be ideal settings for small businesses complementing the village’s unique historical character.
How You Can Help
Vital to the success of the Remember Rockford campaign is the registration of a large number of people with ties to the village. To enable those both near and far to join the campaign, the preservation society has created this Web site, www.rememberrockford.com.
Campaign donations can be made by writing the Rockford Preservation Society at 4844 Rockford Road, Dobson, N.C. 27017. We also need volunteers and corporate sponsors to help with the renovations.
The Rockford Preservation Society is a non-profit, volunteer organization. Donations are tax-deductible. Please register now! |
